Star Struck Gala 2017

The Splendor of India

May 6, 2017
Experiencing the Splendor of India

On May 6th over 250 people entered Mullen Hall (Some say it was transformed into the Taj Mahal) on the grounds of Monocacy Manor, Bethlehem for the celebration of the 7th Annual Star Struck Gala & Silent Auction.  They were greeted by the Gala Team and several Sisters resplendent in colorful saris. Tables and walls were draped with beautiful flowing saris, flowers and mementos of India, collected over the years by the School Sisters. An enormous elephant donned in fabric and jewels stood center stage. Beautiful and colorful lighting was provided by Mike Salvaggio of ESG Lighting.

Our guests sampled Indian hors-d’oeuvres and enjoyed an amazing, festive meal prepared by the Retreat Center chefs, Carol Devine and Beth VanCouteran, who was assisted by our dear friend, Joanne Anderson. During dessert, we were captivated by Vedanta Dance Academy. Looking exceptional in their traditional garb and led by Firuzi Desai, the dancers shared a splendid selection of Bharatanatyam, Fusion and Bollywood dances.

The Silent Auction attracted many and the Star Struck Raffle had lucky winners.  Faithful friend and retreatant, Dorothy Trexler won the gorgeous star-patterned quil, donated by Sharon Rehrig and friends.  Dotty was thrilled!

Since the School Sisters of Saint Francis have always been in involved in education and formation, at this year’s Gala Saint Francis Center for Renewal chose to Shine Its Light on Philip Fromuth, Ph.D., the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Allentown.  Four outstanding Women of Strength were honored as well.  These included: Dr. Milissa Bolcar, Pamela Tuskes, Teresa Connors – all former graduates of Saint Francis Academy, and S. Regina Ann Rokosny, OSF.  In addition, a San Damiano Crucifix was presented to Ellen Kraft in remembrance of her mother, Joan – friend and benefactor of the Renewal Center.

With oohs and ahs, our guests affirmed the talents and dedication of Jan Gough and the Gala Committee. School Sisters Ancy Francis and Beena Jose from the Region of India also attended the Gala in traditional Indian dress.  They too complimented the committee on their efforts to bring the splendor of India to life.

Next year’s Gala will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Ministry of Saint Francis Center for Renewal and will have Msgr. John Murphy as our honored guest. Save the Date: May 5, 2018, and stay tuned for more details!
